The Salon de Cheveux Story

How Our Salon Was Born

I established Salon De Cheveux in April of 2010. I had worked in a very popular salon in Cañon City, but after the death of my mother, I needed to make some changes in my life.

I started out in one side of a building and did hair and nails solo for one year.  The next year, I added two booth rent positions and expanded into the other side of the building.  

Soon after, I attended a class called Mission Possible that opened my mind to a better way of business, and I started looking for a large building, as my staff was already beginning to grow.  In July of 2012, we moved into the current location of 723 Main Street. 

Over the years, we have added stylist stations, a beautiful shampoo area, four treatment rooms and a large retail display area.

When the salon was shut down in March of 2020 due to COVID-19, I had the time to look at what we were doing, and develop a plan to make us better.  I attended countless Zoom seminars and trainings and started working on a plan to make us debt free and build our clientele.  Staffing changes upon reopening have given us our current team of dedicated stylists who care about our guests, and want to build an experience for each one.

Unexpected Renovations

In February of 2021, we had the unfortunate experience of having a vehicle drive through our front door and destroy our retail and shampoo area, and take out two styling stations. One employee was injured, but it could have been so much worse. We were shut down for just four short days as we began the clean up and doing what we would need to do to get our staff back to work.

We took this opportunity to do the remodel that we have always wanted to do.  By the end of summer 2021, Salon De Cheveux will be operating with an entirely new look.  The staff during this time was amazing!  Each one pitching in where they could, and being supportive and being flexible when things were uncertain.

We continue to grow and evolve as a business, as I research products and services and bring the best and most innovative things into our salon. Our staff participates in hands-on training for both services and best business practices with the companies that we partner with so that we can continue to offer the best guest experience in town.  We believe that high tech will never replace high touch, and after COVID-19, we realize how many people may receive that touch only through their salon experiences.

We are in a unique position to be able to service not only our local community, but also the many people that travel through our community. 

I believe in our community, I believe in small businesses and I believe that growth helps us all.  I believe that it is important to know what other businesses are in your community, and that we must become experts in promoting one another along with ourselves.

Founder / Owner / CEO

Lori Leonard is the founder, owner, and CEO of Salon De Cheveux, a full-service beauty salon located in the heart of Cañon City, Colorado. With over two decades of experience in the beauty industry, Lori has built her career on the belief that self-care is essential for everyone.

Her path into the industry began unexpectedly when a friend who owned a salon saw her potential and encouraged her to pursue cosmetology. Since receiving her license from Center Beauty College in Pueblo, Lori has expanded her skills with advanced training from brands such as Redken, Pureology, FarmHouse Fresh, Tuel, Mirabella, Seven Hair Care, and Duomo Pro Color.

Expertise and Training

Lori's expertise spans a wide range of services, including haircuts, coloring, and facials. She is certified in Tuel/Berodin skincare, waxing, microdermabrasion, and treating hyperpigmentation, allowing her to provide personalized skincare solutions for her clients. Lori continues to focus on expanding her knowledge, attending workshops and symposiums from major beauty brands.

She also has a passion for education and works with Cañon City High School, allowing interns to gain hands-on experience in the salon as part of their curriculum. Lori has recently transitioned into the managerial side of her business, focusing on the financial aspects and performance metrics while still maintaining her love for providing high-quality services.

Philosophy and Vision

Lori's philosophy centers on the idea that beauty is defined by the individual, and self-care should be a priority for everyone. She believes in creating a personalized guest journey, from the initial consultation to the follow-up after each service, ensuring clients feel valued and pampered.

Lori’s attention to detail extends to every aspect of the salon, from the products used to the warm, welcoming atmosphere she has cultivated. She is dedicated to continuing education and encourages her staff to stay updated on the latest trends and techniques.

Looking Ahead

Looking forward, Lori aims to step fully into her role as a business leader, transitioning away from providing services behind the chair to focus on managing and growing her business. Outside of the salon, Lori enjoys spending time with her family, traveling with her husband, and reading, especially books on business development.

Her leadership, passion for the beauty industry, and commitment to her clients and community ensure that Salon De Cheveux will continue to thrive as a local favorite.

Jennika K.

Cosmetologist

Jennika King brings fresh artistry and passion to Salon De Cheveux in Cañon City, Colorado. As a new cosmetologist with one year of industry experience, Jennika combines her background in painting and 3-D art with professional training to create stunning hair transformations. Her journey in the beauty industry was inspired by her longtime connection to the salon, having been a client of Lori's since childhood.

Expertise and Training

Trained at Intellitec in Pueblo, Jennika has pursued advanced education through several prestigious programs, including Redken Master Color Class, Cliove Styling Course, Hanzo Master Cutting Class, and Sugar of the Nile Training. She has already made her mark in the industry by working on hair and makeup teams for notable events like The Southern Colorado Spring Fashion Show, Pueblos Got Talent, and The Southern Colorado Fall Fashion Show.

Jennika specializes in coloring and blonding services, with particular expertise in vivid fashion colors. She carefully selects premium products for her clients, favoring the Pureology line, Redken brushable hairspray, and Mizani Miracle Milk to achieve optimal results.

Philosophy and Vision

Jennika's approach centers on building trust with her clients to create personalized, emerging experiences. She believes in the mantra "feel good, look good," emphasizing that confidence comes from both expert care and genuine connection. Her realistic approach to hair goals ensures clients understand the journey to achieving their desired results.

Looking ahead, Jennika aims to advance through multiple skill levels within her first year at the salon while building a consistent clientele. She maintains a healthy work-life balance by setting clear boundaries and dedicating specific time for client communication during business hours.
